Experimenting With New Media: Paperclay
I've recently been playing around with paperclay, a new medium that has proven to be EXTREMELY versatile.

At first, it feels something like over-worked biscuit dough... but after playing a bit more, I realized more water could be added to make it more pliable, and it can even be carved into once it has partially dried.

The dried surface is porous and paper-like (not surprisingly), which presents endless possibilities for painting, glazing, lacquering or simply leaving virgin white.

I can't wait to start making more pieces with this stuff. A bit of sanding and a varnish makes it look and feel like porcelain... only much lighter and more durable.

Go nuts! I think paperclay would be perfect for making beads, small sculptures and even doll heads. It would also make a GREAT cake topper, as it is light-weight enough not to sink into the cake.

I recommend picking up a pack of this at your local craft store, ASAP.

One more note... It is literally made of paper pulp. So, if it dries out too quickly, simply reconstituting it with water brings it right back to being pliable. Great stuff.
