Graphic art/design is a field that is open to independent business or working within an organization. This can be within the design community or with other business. It is a competitive occupation where a bachelor's degree or higher is needed. However, an associates degree fulfills requirements in technical jobs.
Graphic artists with computer design and graphics software knowledge and experience in such areas as animation and Web site design have more options open to them. Along with this the graphic artist needs the ability to solve problems, communication skills and creativity.

Education
A portfolio of artwork should be assembled. Schools look at the applicant's work to see if you have the talent required for their program.
Technical or assistant positions require a two- to three-year program. The courses for this focus on the technical portion of graphic with limited other courses.
Completing the two- to three-year program can be done by those who have a bachelor's degree in another field. This qualifies them to be a graphic artist.
A bachelor's degree in graphic design is needed for entry level as a graphic artist. Graduate work is required by some employers.
The courses for the bachelor's degree cover basic education requirements such as language, sociology, psychology, writing, art history, a second language, studies of other cultures, business and marketing. The design courses cover Web site design, printing, art, principles of design, using the computer to create designs and graphics creation for the commercial market.
Graduate degrees are also available and required by some employers.
Continuing Education
Keeping current on computer programs is continual. This is accomplished through self study or more formal programs.
Graphic Design Career Levels
The main levels of a graphic design career are entry-level, staff-level, senior, solo (or consulting), design directors and designers who run their own design businesses.
Jobs
Novice graphic designers will sometimes receive training within their job. Career advancement for designers starting at this position takes one to three years.
Common non-technological jobs for graphic designers are advertising, publishing and printing; while common technological jobs are designing for movie production firms and computer systems design firms. Other job for graphic designers is teaching graphic design, running a private studio or as a consultant.
