Art HistoryOverview
Pablo Picasso was born in Malaga, Spain. He attended the School of Fine Arts and then opened his first studio. He spent many years as a young adult in Barcelona, sharing studios with different artist friends. Even when he went to live in Paris, he returned to Barcelona often. The Picasso Museum in Barcelona, which was established at his own request, is an excellent tribute to him.
History
Because Picasso was born in Malaga and spent much of his time in Barcelona, there are museums in both of these locations. Barcelona's Picasso Museum opened in 1966 and includes a wide range of artwork, particularly many from age 10 to his teen years. It's interesting to see how his style changed so many times over his lifetime.
Malaga
The Museo Picasso in Malaga includes the special works that he gave to his family and friends or decided to keep for himself. Most of the collection was donated by his daughter-in-law and grandson. The building used for the museum was an early palace and includes Roman and Moorish artifacts that were found in the area. It's also possible to see the house in which he was born.
Las Meninas
The most well-known works located in the Barcelona collection are called Las Meninas. Painted in 1957, they are a suite of 58 works that analyze Diego Velazquez's painting called Las Menas.
Paris
Another major Picasso museum is located in historic Paris, where he spent much of his adult life. The museum contains several thousand works of art. When Picasso died in 1973, many of his works went to the French state. The museum is in a 17th century hotel, which was built in 1656 for a general. The museum was completed in 1985.
Picasso's Own Collection
The Picasso museum in Paris has several unique pieces, such as a self-portrait and another with his brother. In addition, you can see the paintings Picasso collected of other well-known artists, such as Paul Cezanne, Henri Matisse and Edgar Degas.
