According to the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary, graphic design is: "the art or profession of using design elements (as typography and images) to convey information or create an effect: also: a product of this art." Graphic design is a vocation that spans several different industries. Graphic designers can be trained in one specific field or several. It is part of the progression of creating (designing) and it is the results of it (the design), as well.
Significance
This profession is often done on a freelance basis, sometimes as a part-time job. Approximately one-fourth of all graphic designers are self-employed. It is possible to obtain employment as a graphic designer with an associate's degree. However, those who obtain a bachelor's degree will have the greatest chances. This is especially true for those who have familiarity in website design and animation.
Function
Graphic designers are often referred to as graphic artists. They are trained to diagram, evaluate and produce visual clarification to communication problems. Graphic design takes an idea, want or need and transforms it into a visual statement. It is the process of creating or designing a concept. Graphic design is found all around in product packages, magazines, billboards, storefronts, animation, websites and a number of other things.
Types
Graphic design is used in various types of business situations. This includes designers who specialize in advertisement-associated services. Print graphic design covers newspapers, magazines, books and other printed materials. Computer graphic design consists of graphics generated for use in the creation of movies or computer systems. Other types of graphic design are for engineering services, administration, industrial consulting and scientific businesses.
Features
A graphic design can incorporate one or several job tasks. This can include producing designs, deciding on setup including size, color, style and other factors of the finished design. Modern graphic design uses computer programs to create new graphics or alter others. A graphic design can feature drawing, illustrations, charts, artwork, logos, product graphics, photography and more.
Knowledge
There is a level of knowledge and skill needed for graphic design. This includes comprehension of computer hardware and software, the proper understanding of the English language, communications and media processes, various design methods, client and personal service standards, sales and marketing principles and techniques and fine arts abilities.
