Graphic designing is a process that utilizes elements of both art and technology. Whether you want to put something on display, market something, sell something, or entertain someone, graphic designing is a procedure that comes into play. Graphic designing is also a medium for verbal communication. There are a lot of different types of graphic design. Every day, whether we are looking at billboards or brochures at the dentist's office, we are witnessing some form of graphic design.
Types
There are countless examples of graphic design. From advertisements in magazines, the covers of compact discs, layouts of Web pages, business cards, posters and brochures, practically everything we lay our eyes on is covered in some form of graphic design.
Function
People who work in graphic designing (known as graphic designers) work with drawn, computer generated, painted and photographed images and design everything from the layout to the typeface or font that is being used. All of these elements are placed together artistically in order to convey a message or an idea.
Symbols
Symbols and logos are very important elements of graphic designing. They are ways to help make something--whether it's a product or a service--identifiable. Examples of symbols include the NBC peacock and the McDonald's golden arches. Those are both identifiable, one-of-a-kind symbols that we automatically recognize. Graphic designers must have a vivid understanding of a company or product in order to create a symbol or logo to associate it with.
Image Design
Image-based designing is an important aspect of graphic designing. Graphic designers work to create powerful, memorable images that can effectively communicate the ideas and visions of their clientele. Moods and emotions also need to be expressed, along with information and facts. These images can be painted, drawn or photographed.
Type Design
Type-based designing is also an important factor in graphic design. In certain instances, graphic designers must depend on words or text to express an idea. This is meant to put across the meaning of the product or the service they are trying to visually express. It is important to choose or create a typeface or font that is attractive, pleasant and compelling enough to make the audience pay special attention to the text and the message.
