Overview

how paint roses oil : Overview : Rose painted with oil
The rose is a classic symbol used in all media of artwork, and oil paint delivers a vibrant depiction of the flower. People generally consider oil a difficult medium to work with because it is not removable with water and it dries slowly. However, the ease of blending oil colors makes it a popular paint in spite of its challenges. Painting roses with oil requires practice. Choose whichever colors and styles you wish to match your décor.

Sketch the rose onto the canvas with a pencil. You can reference photos of roses to find desirable shapes and appropriate lighting/shading.

Step 2

Choose the lightest color your rose will have---aside from white---and paint the lighter sections of the rose. Apply liberally if desired. You can easily cover it with darker colors.

Step 3

Choose the darkest color of your rose---aside from the shading color---and paint the rose sections this color will dominate.

Step 4

Choose a color shade between the lightest and darkest colors used. Dab your brush in mineral spirits, then into the new color. With your brush on the canvas, pull all colors into one another without completely mixing them.

With a thin-haired brush, apply hints of shading with a dark color. Apply highlights to outer edges of petals with white paint.

TIPS AND WARNINGS

  • TIP : If your paint is too thick or doesn't spread evenly, dip your paint brush in mineral spirits before applying the paint. Stand back from your painting---approximately one foot---to see through the detail for an accurate view of your work.
  • WARNING : As oil paint slowly dries, avoid using dark colors too early. You will not be able to apply a lighter coat of paint for two days.
