Overview

how to clean oil painting : Overview
Oil paintings have unique textures that collect dust and dirt particles. It can be difficult to clean an oil painting without damaging the fragile surface. Learning how to clean an oil painting is easy, but remember that valuable artwork should always be cleaned and restored by a professional. This article will explain how to clean an oil painting.

Step 1

Remove the frame of the oil painting. This will make it easier to clean the entire painting.

Step 2

Tear the crust off a piece of white bread and use the interior to blot the surface of the painting. Accumulated dirt or soot will stick to the bread.

Step 3

Use a soft-bristled brush to wipe any remaining crumbs from the surface of the painting. Do this on a regular basis to help prevent dust from accumulating.

Step 4

If the damage is more severe, there are products available at art supply stores to help clean and restore oil paintings. Before using any, test a small dab on the corner or edge of your painting.

Step 5

Clean the frame well. If chemicals or water are used, let dry completely before returning the painting to the frame.

TIPS AND WARNINGS

  • TIP : Keep your valuable paintings away from your fireplace. Smoke can discolor your painting. Cotton swabs or soft cotton towels can also be used to wipe the surface of the painting gently.
  • WARNING : Consult a professional if any of the paint seems loose, because even gentle cleaning methods may damage the surface.
